This enchanting Barn Owl is carved from an oak tree that is over 400 years old. The neighbouring tree which stood in a Perthshire village blew over in a storm causing considerable damage to the adjacent property. This tree was assessed and found to be in poor health and was deemed unsafe, and later cut down. A large stump was left which obstructed the view out of the driveway. I was brought in to turn the stump into a piece of artwork which could be admired by passers by and allow for a clearer line of sight. This was an off cut from that stump. The blue/grey staining you can see is caused by oxidation from metal contamination probably from something like a screw or fence nails. It adds character which is completely bespoke and not repeatable. Oak is naturally durable and has been finished with a high quality preserve. Due to the very slow natural drying of oak, this carving is best suited to being kept out doors to minimise cracking.
